My Skiing Experience
Last week I went on a ski holiday with my boyfriend and his family for the first time! I have never been skiing before (other than one quick lesson in an indoor ski slope in Dubai)! It was such a scary but amazing experience.
On the first day, I had a couple hours on the slopes before a 2hr lesson with an instructor - who was really good and also very crazy… he just kept “woo”ing the whole time and shouting across the slopes to other people. It was quite a laugh and definitely made the lesson a little more relaxed. He did make me do a small jump though, which was quite terrifying 😂
After a little break, we went back on the slopes and did some easier runs to get me back on my feet. Shoutout to my boyfriend, Will, who stayed with me and waited while I was super slow and annoying the whole time lol
Once I got through the first few days, my experience was a lot better and so much fun :) I constantly improved throughout the trip which felt so good and it gave me a lot of confidence (not enough though as I stayed far from the black runs, for now).
A little bit about the accommodation
We stayed at this lovely ‘hotel and apartments’ accommodation, Lederer’s Living. From the moment we stepped through the door, the couple that owns the place were so accommodating and wonderful! We rented one of the flats, which was perfect (click the picture for a link to the website if you want to have a look).
The flat had a kitchen, which was so useful for brekkie in the morning and for dinner too. It made the holiday cheaper and kind of more relaxing. It meant if we were too tired to go out to eat one evening, we could just come back, get into our pyjamas and chuck something in the oven OR cook an incredible meal (we had steak and chips one night)🥩🤤
The accommodation also included a FREE unlimited spa for the whole time we were there!! This was absolutely incredible and so lucky! The spa had around 11 pools (all different temperatures and purposes) and a bar right by the pool🍹🤪
The only disadvantage (not really a problem though) is that the hotel was about a 10-15 min drive to both resorts, so you would either have to hire a car or get a bus every day. The bus connections were so good in Kaprun / Zell Am See though, so it’s basically all around a great place to stay!
Aprés Ski
To be honest, Austria (or at least Kaprun / Zell) isn’t very good for Aprés.. yes, of course there were lots of places for drinks on the mountain and down below, and we definitely drank our weight in beer, wine and gin, but the bars just didn’t seem as fun as they could’ve been. If you want a nice relaxing holiday with a bit of drinking and lots of skiing, this is it! but if you want one with proper Aprés, Kaprun wouldn’t be my first recommendation.
All in all this ski holiday was absolutely perfect! Although it was very scary at times and annoying when people cut me off on the slopes😡, I learnt a new skill and can now say I can ski (kind of).
I never ever thought I would ski / go on a ski holiday but honestly, last week has completely changed my view and I am so happy and grateful to have been taken on this holiday⛷
I will also definitely be going on my university ski trip next year (major FOMO as everyone is there right now and i’m sat at my desk at work😔).
If you haven’t gone skiing before, yes it’s an expensive holiday, but save up and get yourself on the slopes! It’s such a great experience and so much fun⛷❄️
