Book Club

By Kim

The Piccadilly Line with its endless delays makes the perfect location to read. For 6 months, I soundtracked my commute with Spotify or The Receipts podcast on a Wednesday. So in January, I set myself the challenge of reading one book a month and I've actually managed to stick to it.

📅January 📘 The Woman in the Window by A J Finn
I started off strong with this one, and it was a breeze to read. It’s about a woman with agoraphobia, who is now afraid of being anywhere but inside her own home. She’s a top class people watcher, and the book follows her as she faces the consequences of peeping on her neighbours. It’s full of suspense and continuously makes you question your assumptions of the ‘truth’. The only issue for me is the ending, but it’s still a great read.

📅February 📘 The Boy at the Door by Alex Dahl
This book is written from multiple character viewpoints, about a strange, quiet child that ends up living with a family full of secrets. I gave this book a tough time while I was reading it and would regularly rant about how much I disliked the main character. But looking back, it was actually a good story full of suspense, despite the frustration it caused deep within my soul.

📅March 📘 Hidden Bodies by Caroline Kepnes
This is the book after ‘You’ (si, also the Netflix series). Joe, the main character is a dangerously over-passionate guy who does pretty much anything to protect the girl he loves. I finished this book really quickly as it was almost as easy to read as The Woman in the Window, and was pretty funny too. But, I have to say that Joe’s twisted sense of humour and grandiose does get a bit much at times so be ready for this if you’re going to give it a try.

📅March/April 📘 Why we think the things we think by Alain Stephen
I bought this book in a 2 for £5 sale in HMV at least 2 and a half years ago, and I've been attempting to read it every six months without fail ever since. It’s all interesting information, but it requires a load of thought and concentration that I wasn’t willing to give it early in the morning or after a day at work. I'll try again next year (maybe..)

📅April 📘 Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton

Dolly was a guest on the Gurls Talk podcast hosted by Adwoa Aboah I was listening to last week. I loved Dolly’s attitude towards life and her brutal honesty on the topics we don’t usually discuss. I'm about halfway through this book and enjoying it so far, I'm really glad that the way she came across on the Podcast is just as she does in the book.

Out of curiosity: does anyone else find it easiest to read when listening to music with words? I've been getting called out on this by my friends quite a bit recently but I always thought it was normal! Leave a comment on here or on the IG post.
