My friend works at Disney so we got to do some extra things when we went to see Aladdin🔌. The evening started with a drinks reception on the balcony of the Theatre, and ended with a backstage tour and meeting Aladdin and the Genie (who are only slightly less impressive out of costume).
I hadn’t been to a West End show since I saw The Curious Incident around 6 years ago for GCSE drama (saying that makes me realise how quickly time has gone *cries*). I'd even forgotten what the story of Aladdin was about, having not watched the movie for even longer than that time.
The accents did get a bit questionable at times, but this was kind of funny and you get used to it. But, what majorly impressed me was the dancing of the entire cast. It reminded me a tiny bit of Beyonce’s Coachella set it was almost that good! The effort that was put in by everyone behind the scenes really showed. Coordinating over 400 lights, so many moving parts of the set and three figure costume changes was insanity. The energy in the room was buzzing during the upbeat songs, those with flashy sets and shiny costumes, and took a complete turn during Aladdin’s first ballad, ‘Proud of Your Boy’ which actually made me tear up a little bit. But I bet I wasn’t the only one, as you could feel everybody’s eyes and focus laser in on Aladdin.
Going to see Aladdin has reignited my theatre flame a little bit and I'll probably be going more in future. Check out Today Tix for some well priced last minute deals and ticket lotteries. I reckon I'll go for Betrayal next, and tickets are only £18 in May and it has Vod from Fresh Meat in it. Win win.
