Top 5 Songs of 2019 So Far

By Kim

We’re already coming up to the end of March now, and to celebrate making it all this way into the year, here are some of my favourite songs so far. I know some of these songs are far from new, but sometimes you have music sat in your library that you haven't actually listened to, or sometimes you hear people speak about artists you've never listened to either. Anyway, have a look below at the list of tracks I’ve got on repeat at the moment.

(Click the album covers for a link to the song if you’re interested!)

Bamboo by Elder Island

This is exactly what I was talking about when I said that some of the songs aren't really new. Up until last week, I‘d only heard the name Elder Island thrown around but never listened to them, which is a shame as every song I've heard by them so far has been great.

My favourite things about Bamboo is the chilled out echos of singer Katy’s voice and the Ghanian Marimba being played throughout the whole song, which I think make it a really memorable and interesting track to listen to.

Martyr by Palace

I saw Palace at Hoxton Hall last October which was a special night. This was the first concert I'd been to where the headline band's songs were all relatively slow paced. After that, I went with a few friends to a Palace Presents event (the band put these on every month at The George Tavern in London with other great musicians for *freeee*), it was a really intimate event where we got to meet and chat to the band and other people that went to see them too.

The first two lines Martyr quickly explain what the song is about, while the rest of the song builds on this story. This song ends up being one of Palace’s heavier sounding songs and is something they’ve done really well.

All In My Head by Island

Island are a band that I am so genuinely excited to see perform live later on this year. There hasn’t been a song of theirs that I can fault and they're so easy to listen to that they are my go-to napping soundtrack. I still love to listen to them even when I'm not asleep though don't worry, and this is a great single off the new album to be released later this year.

Cafe D’Athens by Foals

This song is my definite favourite of the new album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost that came out earlier this month. It’s a really snappy song that I find gets me in the mood to get up and get stuff done. If you ever need a song to get you motivated to tidy your room or something, then this is the one to go for. I love how layered this song is, and it feels like you’re wandering around in space by the end of it.

Cherry by Jungle

This is another one of those songs on the list that isn’t new at all. The first songs I heard by Jungle included Drops and The Heat, (both great songs) but I made the mistake of not taking them seriously until their latest album, For Ever came out. Once I finally listened to the whole album, I realised how great it was, with Cherry being my favourite track from it. If you only listen to one of the songs I have listed in this post, then make sure this is the one you choose. I'm still not tired of it after listening to it so often which is always a good sign😁.

What do you think about my list? I'd love to know your top songs so far this year that you would recommend!
